This book is about history and it is about today. Some days I feel discriminated against just because I have a job….I think it should remind us all about how we treat each other in 2010.If you are a kind person, you may feel treated like the “The Help”, no matter race, origin, or color of your eyes. We should all take heed.

I had heard many good things about this novel with many recommendations that, as a Harry Potter fan, I would enjoy it. I’m happy to say that it lived up to all of the hype. This is yet another example of a fine writer producing children’s literature that’s not all that childish. Like a really well-done cartoon, there’s plenty in its pages to entertain and amuse children and many references that will go straight over their heads but that adults will enjoy.

The language Colfer uses is really wonderful. He doesn’t try to dumb it down and the vocabulary is colorful and would be a nice challenge for younger children and yet it’s not so academic that it becomes daunting. Colfer uses colorful language and does an excellent job of setting the scene and creating believable and fun dialogue.

The best thing about this book, though, is Colfer’s prodigious imagination. Artemis is a very fun and unexpected character and the Butlers were also a lot of fun, particularly Julia with her penchant for wrestling. Colfer’s twists on traditional folklore and fairytale creatures is very innovative and his take on how the “Mud People” stereotype fairies, elves, and dwarves was a riot. Colfer is very adept at using such satire to great effect and while kids will find it funny, adults will appreciate how Colfer pokes fun at our own world.

Overall, this book is a great deal of fun and I look very forward to reading the next installment.

I can’t begin to rave enough about the Kindle. This device has made me, a woman in her 30s, a read-aholic! Although I am college graduate and have read my fair share of books, I have read more on my Kindle than in my entire life. My husband bought the Kindle for me over a year ago. Immediately, I purchased a few books that I figured would be light reading for our upcoming trip overseas. I found reading on the Kindle so enjoyable (thanks to the adjustable text and portability), I almost spent the entire vacation glued to these books. I would usually need to wear reading glasses, but with the Kindle, I can adjust the text to perfectly suit me. In addition, this device is so lightweight, I can sit or lie with it in any position comfortably. Since purchasing the Kindle, I have become a daily reader, gobbling up tons of good reads. I find reading much more enjoyable now than I ever have, and have even gone on to tackle classics like Madame Bovary and War and Peace. I was once the girl who constantly raved about the newest movie, but now I’m the girl who asks about the latest bestseller. I no longer sit down in front of the TV, but instead, curl up with my Kindle. :) Thank you Amazon!

Why I bought this CD: Patrick Wilson. I saw Phantom a handful of times when it came out on DVD, and he has done a couple of plays I’ve seen performed at my school (he wasn’t in ours obviously). I had actually found out about this musical while researching RENT, and tried to find the CD, not knowing that it had been in production for four years, and was going to be out in mere months. I think, had I been my current age when it came out and in NY, I would have tried to see it.

Why I Kept the CD: The other singers: Jesse L. Martin, Shere Rene Scott, Celia Keenan-Bogler, Eden Espinosa and Kelli O’Hara(Kelli doesn’t have any parts, she’s just in the chorus), etc. It also is very suggestive with lots of drug references and sexual innuendoes, and I’m assembling a mix CD of showtunes called Dirty Broadway (partially to prove that showtunes can be appealing to twentysomethings today), so it was perfect to fill up some of the tracks.

Below is a track-by-track analysis of my thoughts of the CD. These are opinions only, so don’t shoot me if you have a differing opinion.

Bright Lights Big City–I find this song in my head a lot while at work (which often isn’t good considering the drug allusions). The hook often shows up in other songs, which can get annoying.

Back In The City–LOVED this track, mostly because it showcases Jesse L. Martin (as Tad). It intoduces his character very well and it sets the timeline best (with a countermelody singing 1984…1984…). Not always the best thing if you want to perform it out of the context of the show, but whatever.

Sunday Morning 6AM- Intros Mary O’Brian McCann (played by Celia Keenan-Bolger), one of Jamie’s figments of a drug-induced haze. I like singing her part. Also has the first appearance of Amanda, Jamie’s ex-wife.

Coma Baby– Hard Rock song, perfect for headbanging, sang by Eden Espinosa. Coma Baby is another figment of Jamie’s imagination.

Fact or Fiction– This is the song I imagine would be in some form of the musical

My wife and I are seniors, and we mostly eat the right foods and try to exercise some, but we’re not fanatics about it. I recently had double-hernia surgery, and figured it would help the healing process if I was able to lose a few pounds prior to surgery,(I’m 5′8″, and weighed 213), so I eliminated snacks like ice cream and peanut butter, and substituted more fruits like apples and blueberries. Seems to have worked; my weight on the hospital scale on the morning of surgery was 201.
Well, so now I’m all motivated to get down to my weight of 25 years ago, about 175-180. Our old spring loaded scale was way past its prime–we had to advance the dial setting from “zero” to “+8 lbs” in order to get the same reading as our doctor’s scale. Time for a new scale.
I checked a few of the most highly rated digital scales on Amazon, and decided that the Eat Smart Digital Bathroom Scale was the best scale available, as well as being the best value. Why? First and foremost, it’s extremely accurate, based on the tests that some of the reviewers performed. Second, it features a large, backlit, easy to read display, which is important to anyone who weighs themselves just before they step in the shower and have already removed their eyeglasses.
Next, it is well made, looks good, is easy to store, and has a two year full warranty. I also like the fact that it reports your weight down to one decimal place, but I had to promise my bride that I won’t obsess about gaining less than one whole pound.
Last note–we haven’t had any trouble turning the scale on–just raise it a bit with your big toe, then set it down like another reviewer suggested.

We highly recommend this product.
