When you’re all grown up, with a family to feed and a demanding job, it’s not so easy to read books anymore. Bad books are stealing time that is much more precious than when you were living at mom’s house, or in a dorm. If you’re like me, you can’t afford the time-cost of the “try it and see” method of book selection. I can read one novel a month, and it had better be damned good or I’ll feel cheated. This is one of those books that is worth the time. I have never written an Amazon review before, but after finishing Water For Elephants, I decided to break my silence. There’s a reason you’re seeing so many positive reviews here. If you’re still undecided, let this review be the one that sets your mind.

I really like my new 5200. I am new to the digital camera scene but I’m glad I bought the Nikon. The salesman explained the diferences between the many 5 Meg cameras in stock and I found the Nikon to be the easiest to learn to operate. My wife is usually the camera person in the house but I believe this camera will be much more fun than a regular film camera. I love the idea of snapping loads of shots, looking at them on the computer, and THEN deciding which ones to keep. Digital is the way to go and this Nikon is the way to get there.

I -love- the Kindle. Living in North Dakota, my whispernet coverage is iffy (it takes me about three minutes to connect to the Kindle Store and usually about 5 tries to get a book downloaded–the whole process can take anywhere between five and thirty minutes to actually get a new book, even from my archives). However, it’s still faster and cheaper than driving thirty minutes to the nearest bookstore!

The ability to flip the display in four directions is awesome. I can read in bed with the Kindle propped up with the front of the cover I bought for it, and if I decide to flip over and read on my other side, I can rotate the text around so that it’s viewable and still prop-able. :D

The other nice thing is being able to delete a book off the Kindle, but still having near-instant access to it, via the archive. It’s like finishing your book and putting it back on the shelf. Not in your way but right there in case you need it.

Battery life is great. I keep the WiFi turned off about 97% of the time and can read for a week without recharging.

For those who don’t understand the e-ink and how it works with the display–you will need a booklight for reading at night (if you don’t want to turn on a lamp or overhead lights. It’s exactly like a paper book. The words are very crisp. When I first pulled the Kindle out of the box, I would find myself just staring at the lettering and at the page itself because it was SO fascinating how it really doesn’t look like a computer screen. It looks just like you tore a page out of a paperback (blasphemy!) and pasted it on a tiny white computer.

I never go anywhere without it. It enables you to read at the drop of a hat, anytime anywhere, without the bulk of a book. I think I read something like 12 books? last month! I read while I’m cooking, doing dishes… pretty much anytime I’m somewhere with a flat surface.

I would highly recommend the Kindle to any booklover.

Mildly competitive but without rancor! My wife of 52 years and myself are ball room dancers but get very little exercise beyond the Friday night dances. These games get us on our feet and moving while subtly trying to out perform each other. The motivation is still there to improve our scores and simultaneously our over all conditioning. Whether or not it will persist only time will tell.
