At the age of seventeen, most adolescents have to make a decision as to what they will do with their life. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye taking place in New York in the 1950’s, is no different. He decides that he has to “catch everybody if they start to go over a cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be”. Holden is in the process of transitioning into adulthood; however, he wants to preserve his childhood innocence. He watched as his brother Allie died of leukemia at a young age and can’t bear to think of anyone else missing out on the virtues of childhood. He wants to protect his sister Phoebe from the evil adult world as he encourages her to ride the carousel. Holden himself attempts to venture into society, but can never seem to manage. Going out late at night, drinking, and getting involved with prostitutes are things that Holden tries to do to make the difficult transition. However, Holden faces many internal conflicts that prevent him from entering adulthood. He has flunked out of four preparatory schools and feels abandoned by his parents because he knows they will just send him off to another one without trying to understand the problem. Holden continues to search for his identity, and an answer to where the ducks go when the lagoon in Central Park freezes. All readers will be able to relate to Holden’s frustrations, disappointments, thoughts, and decisions. He proves himself to be complex, sharing the mentality of teenagers today. The audience can connect to Holden’s feelings of isolation and fear of growing up. The theme of Salinger’s book is timeless because Holden’s concerns match those of teenagers everywhere in every era. The Catcher in the Rye is a classic that is truly deserving of

This book was about to get three stars from me until I reached the end. The ending is wonderful and completely redeemed the story.

The story is about a veterinarian who has a breakdown after his parents are killed. He jumps a train at night that turns out to be a traveling circus. He is quickly absorbed into the not so glamorous drama of circus life.

The author seems to have done her research and the book was always interesting enough to keep me turning the page. It did lag during the middle, but the ending nailed it home.

This book is worth your time.

After replacing my old bathroom scale with this sleek, modern, easy-to-read scale, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I stepped on and weighed almost eight pounds heavier than my old scale. So, I put it to the litmus test and placed my two eight-pound hand weights on there, and it registered at 15.6 pounds so if anything, this scale is a fraction of weight under. The price is right too! Good scale!

I bought this solely for its exercise potential. And it is working out great! I am morbidly obese and I’m finding that the Wii Sports games that came bundled in it are perfect for someone who cannot stand for long periods of time. I’m currently up to 40 minutes per day doing a combined routine of bowling, boxing and golf-with an occasional game of baseball or tennis.

Buy the Wii and start getting fit!

My nine year old son and I have read the entire series to each other at bedtime. This is a wonderful series–one of the best we have ever read. The series is a bit dark as other reviewers have suggested (there is a death of a major character in one of the subsequent books). But it is also laugh out loud funny, often in a scatological way particularly appealing to my nine year old. My daughter read this entire series when she was 13 and also loved it.

While lots of topics are included that could be on the CLP practicum, they are by no means covered in the depth that is required to pass this difficult test.

The practicum is not a written test; it is a simulation.
You can’t cram for it; you won’t pass by simply knowing general facts. You must know how to perform several tasks quickly.

If this book presented the topics in a format that said ‘here is what you must know’, and then presented a recommended series of steps to use on the simulation, then I might be able to recommend this book.

Instead, it says here are lots of things you should know about.
That’s not enough.
If you buy this book you will generally know what you will be tested on, but you will definitely not know enough about those things to pass the practicum. You will certainly need to go out and buy several books to learn the subjects in-depth.
Therefore, I cannot recommend this book.
