I suggest it highly to someone with a lot of time to figure it out!

Last night I began reading Artemis Fowl because so many of my friends were saying they were rereading the series for the fifth or sixth time. I began to get excited as well, especially after finding out that it was about a 12 year old evil genius. I finished the book earlier today and found that the only thing I liked about it was the premise: it’s very interesting, and has a lot of potential. Eoin Colfer, however, fails to deliver.
I was not able to identify with (or even believe) any of the characters. It was only Artemis Fowl who managed to draw me in (and only because of the premise), and Colfer keeps him in the background, choosing instead to focus on less interesting characters like Holly and Root.
The majority of the book is made up of dialogue attempting to be witty and failing miserably. Not only were the “jokes” not funny, but they were out of character as well, and inappropriate for the situation. The narrator even admits that the jokes are out of character, mentioning a few times how Artemis is surprised every time he cracks jokes. I have to ask: Why does Artemis crack jokes, then? There is no explanation for this–Artemis’ being (supposedly) “out of character” is not significant to the plot at all. I believe that the writer merely added these instances where Artemis jokes “uncharacteristically” because he couldn’t think of a better way to say that Artemis is not one to joke. Other writers have been able to add humor to grim situations very successfully–Colfer is not one of those writers.
Other than this, every event in the story feels as if it happened much too easily. Artemis getting the Book, Artemis decoding the Gnomish, Artemis finding a way to survive. I know he’s supposed to be a genius but, honestly, the ease with which he accomplishes these tasks is highly unbelievable. My friend explained this by saying, “It’s a kid’s book.” Its being a children’s book is not an excuse for bad writing.
The only reason I gave this book two stars is because

I ordered this after watching my husband having fun with his Zune HD, I had to get me one, however, being I already have an 80g classic and 16g nano iPod, I thought I would stick with Apple and get the Touch. Suffice it to say, now the hubby wants an iPod touch. It is a great pocket computer. It does live up to expectations that Apple has touted. I am mainly a music junky that totally loves the iPod music setup, but I have quickly come over to the App side. Apple has almost what seems an infinite amount of apps to choose from…you think of it?, someone probably has come up with it. It shares a lot of the same features that the iPhone does …(of course) it’s not a phone. It is wifi geared, if wifi is not available or is security locked, you can’t access any of the apps..specifically those that are tied into the web. Granted there are apps you can use, in which you have at your fingertips….games to play, music to listen to, movies/videos to watch that you don’t need wifi access. The first accessories I bought for the touch was a protective case and screen protector, very good investment!! The case allows me to stand it on it’s side to watch movies, and is made so it’s doesn’t slide around. The screen protector is like having a matted glass over a picture, and helps keep the annoying fingerprints from being so annoying.

This is one of those books that I don’t want to analyse too much because I fell in love with the characters instantly and care too much about them. The three main characters are wonderfully flawed and human, intelligent, wise, clever, funny, loving, just adorable. The supporting and peripheral characters are equally interesting except for the main antagonist who I wish were a little less one dimensional, which, in my opinion, would have avoided the flavor of Hallmark TV movie. The precarious setting of the 60’s in American politics, not limited to civil rights movement, experienced by the South provides complexity to the collective and individual neurosis. I love the cover which captures the essence of the story, and the author’s own words that add personal history and heartfelt sincerity to the story.

I’m in sales — I’m all about quota and “making my numbers”.
I am also very glad I didn’t review this as soon as I got it. It’s not the easiest to set up. I got it, opened it and put in the battery and put it aside. The directions don’t flow and it took my techie hubby to bail me out– and only after several tries. My first thought was to send it back. So, to avoid my frustration– put the battery in only when you are ready to set it up.
But now, I am in love. The goal is 10K steps a day or 5 miles. They add up. Doing laundry, making the bed and breakfast, etc etc added about a mile. Then I went for my 3 mile walk. My walk has markers and I found it to be accurate. Then it was a birthday celebration and I had a larger meal than usual. So instead of the 10K steps, I walked around my pool several steps. It’s 6PM and I’m at 15K, and feeling light (vs fat) from the meal.
These steps add up, to and fro the shop center parking lot is 75 steps each way. How easy is this– you overeat a bit so step it up! It’s only easy cause you can see your progress.
K– skip the harness. It comes with a string already and the bundled harness is $3 and they’re gonna charge you shipping. I was discouraged reading the other reviews– some saying “get something more serious” at this price? But next one will be a watch, waterproof at that. You need pockets for this. You can put it in your purse, but I don’t take my purse in sales calls.
So, I learned about pedometers, quotas and after one day– feel great. I’m addicted! It keeps me moving– did I mention I’m in sales and love improving my numbers?

I picked this up not knowing a thing about it except the blurb, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this story of love and betrayal under the big top one of the most engaging tales I’ve read in a long while. I’m not much into romance, but this is so much more than that so I couldn’t pull myself away. As a bonus I learned about the dark side of the circus industry during that era. Gaslighting, where they throw the circus hands off the train in the middle of the night to avoid having to pay them, was a new term to me. Despite the cut-throat world they live in, the young veterinarian protagonist and the circus star he has a crush on, try to rise above it all at risk of life and limb.
What tops it off is the story has one of the most satisfying endings I’ve encountered in a long time. I’ve passed my book along to my mother and it has since gone through the hands of three of my sisters. They all loved it. I’m a big fan.
