Wow. I’ve been trying to find the words to review this one since I finished reading it, but I’m not coming up with the right thing here. This book is, simply, amazing. I was shocked to learn this was the first book by this author. The writing is beautiful, eloquent… just… good.

The setting is post segregation, not long after MLK is shot in Jackson, Mississippi. Someone decides to write a book about being a black maid to a white family. It’s poignant, it makes you think, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry. The three main characters are so… real? believable? I’m not sure how to even explain how I felt about them. I felt, many times, like I was sitting in Aibileen’s living room with them.

Don’t miss this one. I was left wanting to know more. What the aftermath was like. What happened? One can only guess…
